What is answer engine optimization?

A practical guide to AEO — what it is, how it differs from SEO and GEO, and what actually makes content quotable by search engines and AI assistants.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so search engines and AI assistants can extract a direct, accurate answer from it. Where traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links, AEO competes to be the source that answers the question outright — in a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, a voice result, or an AI-generated answer.

Why AEO exists now

For two decades the deal was straightforward: a search engine returned ten links and your job was to be one of them. That deal is being renegotiated. Google places AI Overviews above the organic results on a growing share of commercial queries. Assistants like ChatGPT and Perplexity answer directly and cite a handful of sources. Voice assistants read out one answer, not ten.

In every one of those formats, the question is no longer whether you rank. It is whether the system can lift a clean, correct answer out of your page — and whether it trusts you enough to attribute it.

AEO, GEO and SEO — how they differ

DisciplineWhat it targetsWhat it optimises for
SEOThe traditional list of blue linksRelevance, authority and technical health, so a page ranks in the results
AEOFeatured snippets, People Also Ask, voice resultsExtractability — a specific passage being lifted as the answer
GEOChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI OverviewsBeing cited when a system synthesises an answer from several sources

The three overlap heavily. A page that cannot be crawled cannot be ranked, quoted or cited, so technical foundations serve all three. The differences show up in content shape: SEO rewards depth, AEO rewards a crisp answer in a predictable place, and GEO rewards factual density with clear attribution.

What makes content answer-engine friendly

Question-formatted headings

Use the phrasing people actually type. “How long does a powder-coated finish last outdoors?” outperforms “Product overview” because it matches the question a system is trying to answer.

A direct answer, immediately

Roughly forty to sixty words, straight after the heading, answering the question completely before you elaborate. This is the single highest-leverage change most sites can make.

Factual precision

Specific numbers, materials, standards and dates. These systems avoid citing sources whose claims they cannot verify, and vagueness reads as unverifiable.

Structured data

FAQPage, HowTo, Product and author markup tell a machine explicitly what it is looking at instead of making it infer.

Tables for comparisons

Comparison tables are lifted directly into table snippets and quoted readily by AI assistants. A comparison trapped in a PDF can be neither.

Clear attribution

A named author with visible credentials, and an organisation a system can resolve to a real entity. Anonymous content is cited far less often.

The most common mistake we see

A company publishes genuinely excellent material — a maintenance guide, a materials comparison, an installation walkthrough — and structures it as a brochure. The information is right there, and the answer engine passes over it for a thinner source that happened to put the answer under a question. The pattern we see most often is a company’s own guide being retrieved by an AI assistant and then passed over in favour of a thinner source that happened to put its answer directly under a question. The content was not the problem. Its shape was.

How to start

  • Find the questions. People Also Ask boxes, your sales team’s inbox, and the questions buyers ask on calls. These are your headings.
  • Answer each in forty to sixty words, directly under the heading, before any elaboration.
  • Add FAQPage schema to the pages where those questions live, and validate it.
  • Move comparisons out of PDFs and onto real web pages with real tables.
  • Put a name on your content, with credentials and author markup.
  • Test it. Ask the assistants your buyers use and see whether you are cited. If you are not, you now know what to fix.

Answer engine optimization FAQ

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring content so that search engines and AI assistants can extract a direct, accurate answer from it. Where traditional SEO competes for a position in a list of links, AEO competes to be the source that answers the question outright — in a featured snippet, a People Also Ask box, a voice result or an AI-generated answer.

How is AEO different from SEO?

SEO aims to rank a page. AEO aims to have a specific passage of that page quoted as the answer. They share foundations — a page that cannot be crawled cannot be quoted — but AEO puts far more weight on question-formatted headings, concise direct answers, structured data and factual precision.

How is AEO different from GEO?

Generative engine optimization, or GEO, targets AI systems that synthesise an answer from several sources and cite a few, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google Gemini. AEO targets extractive answers, where a system lifts a specific passage more or less verbatim. In practice the same underlying work — clear structure, direct answers, strong schema — serves both, which is why most sensible programs run them together.

What actually makes content answer-engine friendly?

Five things do most of the work. Question-formatted headings that match how people actually ask. A direct answer of roughly forty to sixty words placed immediately below each heading. Factual precision, because these systems avoid citing sources they cannot verify. Structured data such as FAQPage and HowTo. And clear attribution showing who wrote it and why they are qualified.

Does AEO still matter if AI answers reduce clicks?

It matters more. When a buyer receives a direct answer rather than a list of links, being the cited source is the entire prize — it is brand exposure, credibility and consideration in one. The companies losing out are not the ones being cited without a click; they are the ones not being cited at all.

How long does AEO take to work?

Faster than most SEO. Structured data and rewritten answer content can change eligibility for snippets and AI citations within weeks, because you are removing a technical barrier rather than out-competing an established site. Broader gains still take months.
